The Quest for the Right Tinted Lip Balm
More and more people are resorting to home remedies to relieve their chapped and sore lips, especially during winter or during extreme weather conditions. It is, of course, easier to think of just buying off the shelf in the grocery or over the counter in pharmacies, but sometimes the commercial grade and cheap tinted lip balm can be very disappointing.
One of the main reasons for disappointment is the use of large amounts of petroleum as an ingredient. If that were the point, then might as well just buy a big jar petroleum jelly. However, everyone also knows that petroleum is not a good way to go when it comes to treating chapped lips; sometimes it can even worsen it. What people or consumers are now looking for, especially the more widely read consumers, are products that use natural ingredients and those which do not go through animal testing.
Some of the better known brands that are considered “the best” out there in natural goodness and effectivity are Body Shop and Bloom. However, some complain that these are pricey and not as affordable. Then of course there is the old reliable Chap Stick which is internationally well known. However, again, there are consumers who are not satisfied with the results.
Then there are those who like to buy the “glitzier” tinted lip balm which carry big names in cosmetics and can cost a lot. These are used and then discarded by the average consumers because they feel that the same results can be gotten from the cheaper ones. The list of complaints goes on and on and sometimes they just go around in circles.
So, if you are the type who likes to do things on your own and get the best results that way, there is a way out of the conundrum of which product to buy. Why not make your own tinted lip balm? It is very easy, the ingredients are natural, and best of all, for the price of the ingredients that you need to buy, you will get pots and pots of lip balm which you can store for a long time or give away to friends as gifts for Christmas or other celebrations.
All you need is beeswax, carrier oil like jojoba or cocoa butter, essential oil of your choice, your favourite lipstick and honey. Word of warning though, this is a “hot” project so be very careful and don’t get burned in the process of making you tinted lip balm.
Simply mix 3 tablespoons of the grated beeswax flakes (unbleached if possible) over a double boiler. Stir constantly until all are dissolved. Remove from heat and add in about 5 teaspoons of jojoba or cocoa butter, about 7 drops of the essential oil (like peppermint, almond, strawberry, etc.) and one teaspoon of honey as the flavouring. Mix until there are no clumps left. Now for the tint, just get your favourite color lipstick and cut a dab and mix in. Mix well until all is dissolved. All you have to do now is to just pour the mixture into the containers of choice and allow to set and solidify. The setting should only be about twenty or so minutes.
See, that is how easy it is. Soon, you will have enough of the lip balm to last you all of winter and then some. You could even give some to friends, who knows? The point is, you now have the choices of what lip balm to use or buy or make.
